Standard and Advanced Folders Compared

Sync 2.3 features three types of folders:

  • Standard (formerly known as 1.4) - these are classic folders which have existed since the first version of Sync. Connection between peers and data transfer are implemented with the help of randomly generated keys.
  • Advanced (formerly known as 2.0) - initially introduced in Sync 2.0 and based on the public key infrastructure (PKI). This architecture enables you to verify each other's identity with the help of digital certificates. As the name suggests, these folders have advanced functionality (see below).

Standard folders are available in both Free and Pro versions of Sync.
Advanced folders are available in Sync Pro and during the 30-day Trial.

The most significant difference between Advanced and Standard folders is that Advanced folders give you more flexibility with peer management. They come with three types of permission - Read Only, Read & Write, Owner - and you can switch between them at any time. For example, you can share a folder with R&W permission and then, when syncing has begun, change it to RO or Owner in just a couple of clicks. Those peers who have Owner permission can also revoke access to shared folders from others.

Standard folders offer a simplified type of peer management, which features Read Only and Read & Write permissions. It’s important to note that peers using Standard folders may continue sharing data regardless of whether they have RO or RW permissions, in other words, all peers using Standard folders act as Owners. On-the-fly permission changes are unavailable (only a limited possibility for manual permission change from RW to RO key is supported - see below).

Limitations:

  • If you have R&W permission for a Standard folder, you can share it further on granting other peers R&W or RO key, whereas if you have RO permission, you can share the folder with RO rights only.
  • The architecture of Standard folders only allows you to reduce access rights from R&W to RO. For example, if you shared a Standard folder with RO permission, you can issue and share a R&W key for it, but your other peers won’t be able to upgrade their rights. The only scenario possible is when another peer has R&W permission and then, upon your request, enters a new RO key which will reduce their rights.

To change permission for shared Standard folders, you will need to send a new key and have another peer update their current key with the new one.

 Please note

You can’t create an Advanced folder in Sync Free, however, if a Sync Pro user has shared such a folder with you, you can add it to the free version of the app and sync data according to the permission (RO, R&W, Owner) issued.
